Add your first menu
Build a menu, add categories, and stock it with products you can ring up on the POS.
In Rowie, every product belongs to a menu. A menu can be your full bar, a Sunday brunch list, an event menu, or anything else you want to ring up on the POS.
Create a menu
- In the vendor portal sidebar, click Menus (under the OPERATIONS section).
- Click New Menu in the top right of the page.
- The Create Menu modal opens. Fill it in:
- Name (required). For example, "Bar Menu".
- Location (required). Pick from your locations. This locks to a single location once the menu has products, so choose carefully.
- Description. Optional one-liner.
- Active. Toggle on to show the menu in the mobile app.
- Show Tip Screen. Toggle on to display tip options during checkout.
- Tip Percentages. Defaults to 15 / 18 / 20 / 25, fully editable. Click + Add to add another, or the × on any chip to remove.
- Allow Custom Tip. Adds a free-entry tip option to the picker.
- Prompt for Email. Asks for a receipt email at checkout.
- Product Layout. Classic Grid, Magazine, List, Cards, Mosaic, or Compact. Each option shows a one-line preview description. You can change it later.
- Click Create Menu (greyed out until Name is filled).
Free-tier accounts are limited to one menu. Pro unlocks unlimited menus.
Active menus show an Active badge on the menu card. If pre-orders are enabled on a menu it also shows a Pre-Order badge.
Add categories
Categories organise products into tabs on the POS. They're menu-specific. A category in your "Bar Menu" doesn't appear in another menu unless you add it there too.
- Open the menu from the Menus page.
- Click Add Product (or Add Your First Product in the empty state).
- In the Add Product modal, next to the Category dropdown, click the + button to open the Manage Categories dialog.
- Type a name (e.g. "Cocktails") into the Add New Category field and click Add Category.
- Repeat for the rest ("Beer", "Wine", "Food", …). Click Done to return to the product form.
You can revisit Manage Categories any time from the same + button. Categories you create are reusable across products in this menu, but not across menus. The POS picks up changes in real time.
Add products
- From the menu detail page, click Add Product.
- The modal has two tabs.
- New product creates a brand new product. Fill in:
- Product Image. Optional, drop or click to upload.
- Name (required). For example, "Margarita".
- Description. Optional.
- Price (required). Enter in your currency's main unit, with decimals (e.g.
12.50for $12.50,4.00for £4.00). - Category. Pick from the dropdown, or click + to create one.
- Available. Toggle on to show the product on the menu.
- From library reuses a product you already have on another menu. Search by name, pick a product, then set the price and category for this menu. The product itself (name, description, image) stays the same across every menu it's on, but each menu can have its own price.
- New product creates a brand new product. Fill in:
- Click Add Product (or Add to menu on the library tab).
- Back on the menu page, drag-and-drop products between categories or reorder within a category.
Shared products across menus
When a product is on more than one menu, you'll see an amber badge with the menu count on its card. Editing a shared product (name, description, or image) updates it everywhere.
If you want to change the description on just this menu, open the product and click Make a copy just for this menu. Rowie creates an independent copy under the hood, and your edits will only affect this menu from that point on. Price and category were always per-menu, so you never need to fork for those.
Edit menu settings
From the Menus page, click the More options (⋯) button on a menu card. You get four actions:
- Edit opens the same form as Create Menu with the title Edit Menu and a Save Changes button. Location stays pinned to its original value.
- Duplicate copies the menu (products, categories, settings).
- Pre-Order Settings jumps to the public menu / QR code settings (see Public preorder menu and QR codes).
- Delete removes the menu.
Once your menu has at least one product, you're ready to take your first payment.
Tax is set per location, not per menu. See Tax rates.
